Most of us treat the body as something that goes wrong and needs correcting. The headache is a malfunction. The tight chest is a fault. Something to be silenced so the day can continue. But the body isn’t misbehaving. It’s sending a signal — and when the signal goes unheard for long enough, it gets louder, and may show up as a health issue.
Something to try this week
When you want to settle, the instinct is to breathe in more. Deep breath in, hold, try again. It rarely works. The in-breath is the accelerator; the out-breath is the brake. So the instruction isn’t breathe deeply — it’s make the out-breath longer than the in-breath.
Try it now. Inhale through the nose for four counts. Exhale, slowly, for eight counts. Five rounds, about a minute. If eight is too long, use four and six — the ratio matters more than the count.
You may notice the shoulders drop before the mind quiets. That’s the right order; the body usually goes first. It won’t resolve what’s underneath — that’s slower work. But it gives your nervous system a signal it understands, and some days that’s enough to get through the hour.
Kara’s story
Kara came to this work carrying things she’d been carrying a long time. She had good clinical support already — a psychologist she’d worked with for sixteen years. What we did sat alongside that, not instead of it. Her words, not mine: Read Kara’s story →
